Transgendered panel hopes to dispel misunderstandings about gender

With a city as diverse as Sacramento, the City College student body is a showcase of the city’s changing population.

To raise awareness and understanding, the Cultural Awareness Center held a transgender panel Nov. 29, with two Sacramento State guest speakers who discussed their transition from being born female and transitioning into a male identity in the college environment. They provided advice and information to students.

Sacramento State students Jack Harris and Tyler Kinzler spoke to students on how they transitioned from their gender at birth to their new identity in the college atmosphere. By sharing their stories with other students through outreach, Harris and Kinzler said they hoped to spread awareness on transgender issues.

“We inspire people, educate people and get people to take the knowledge that they learn outside,” Kinzler said.

While telling their own stories, Harris and Kinzler also answered questions regarding differences of transgender and sexual orientation. They gave advice on how to ease families into the correct pronouns during the holidays.

While some students sought advice, others said they attended to learn about transgender issues.

Twenty-one-year-old City College sociology student Maria Perez said she became interested in the topic of transgender after hearing it discussed in her human sexuality, sex and gender class.

“I really liked the event because it is rare to hear about these stories, especially from someone having personal experience,” Perez says. “It gives us knowledge about things we do not know.”

As a transgendered woman, psychology major La’Toya Felder, 27, believes that these events help promote the diversity within City College.

“Knowledge is key, and becoming educated about LGBT issues is a productive and positive way to combat prejudice and discrimination in the form of homophobia and transphobia,” Felder says.
