At the beginning of the spring semester, City College men’s and women’s track and field teams prepared for the first rotational meet with enthusiasm and focus. Rain had prevented them from participating in their inner-squad meet, but it had not drenched their spirits and preparations for their first NorCal Rotational in Modesto, where they competed individually rather than for a team score. The women’s team competed in only five events.

The men’s team competed in seven events. A few highlights being brothers Antoine Coleman’s and La Ronn Coleman’s first and third places, respectively, in the men’s 400-meter dash. Freshman Latasha Spriggs took first place in the women’s long jump.

Now both teams face the upcoming Wildcat Relays at Chico State University Feb. 27, and the season won’t let up until May, when the teams perform at the Nor Cal trials.

Men’s head coach Rob Dewar says he is confident in his athletes.

“The first part of the season, I just want to make sure we’re healthy,” says Dewar. “Right now we’re in good shape.”

On a recent winter day, the men’s team runs through warm-up stretches and the guys joke around before practice actually begins. Everyone joins in to do stretching exercises, then individual athletes warm up according to their events.

Team captain Michael Souza says, “We’re ready. Everyone seemed pumped up.”

The women’s team is also preparing for the season’s challenges at practices.

“Be explosive” is the chant heard from head women’s track and field coach Marisa Avendano.

With a strong returning roster of sophomores and focused freshmen, Avendano keeps her athletes charged during pre-practice warm-ups.

“Girls, be explosive! Go, go go go go!” she yells as the women take off on another relay.

Susan Jackson says the chant her coach yells means, for her, to move her body harder and faster from the block, “I just try to do better, move my body just a little better.”

A high jumper, Jackson’s record height last season was 5-feet, 9-inches.

“Today, I hit 5’10”,” says Jackson, 2009 high jump individual champion, Jackson took home first place at the NorCal Rotational, with a best personal record of 5 feet, 10 inches.
