Tips for registration success

Garrick Wong | Staff Writer | [email protected]

As the spring semester comes to a close, students should be aware of important dates and deadlines for the summer and fall.

Zero priority registration begins April 20 and Priority 1 registration for continuing students starts April. 27. For more information regarding priority registration, visit: http://www.losrios.edu/lrc/lrc_reg_dates.php.

According to City College Admissions and Records supervisor Kim Goff, new students need to sign in and pay close attention to their Los Rios Gmail to get important updates from the school.

“We can provide advice and help with enrollment process and navigation of eServices,” Goff said.

For assistance with admissions or registration, students can head to the new Student Services building, located just to the north of Rodda Hall North and to the west of the Performing Arts Center. Admissions and Records is located in the main lobby on the first floor of the Student Services building. Hours are 8 a.m.—6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m.—4 p.m. on Fridays.

Melissa Linck, a nursing major and soon-to-transfer student, gave her perspective on steps to get higher priority registration. Linck applied for Priority 5 registration with her counselor. Priority 5 applies to current students who are about to graduate or transfer at the end of the semester.

“Students should be consistent with going to school so take at least one class every semester, even if you’re not sure what you want to do,” says Linck. “[Also] take classes that you think will interest you even though it might not fall in line with your major, just to find motivation.”

“My advice for future or current students is to join the Summer Success Academy, which has a deadline in April 30, an introduction class for your major and be patient and never give up,” says Weeden. “If you are on the waitlist [for a class], you should stay because there is a chance for you to get in.”

Financial aid is another important part of the registration process each semester for many students.

“One of the things for first-year students is to make sure that they talk with financial aid and that they have all their documents in as soon as possible,” said Goff.

The financial aid office is located in Rodda Hall North 167. Office hours are 8 a.m.—6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Computer labs in Business Building 153 offer students the option to get hands-on advice from staff members regarding financial aid, as well as registration help. The Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver (BOGW) was made available April 13. Students can have their enrollment fees waived. For more information regarding BOGW, please visit: http://www.losrios.edu/lrc/bog_eligibility.php

Summer semester begins June 8 and fall semester starts on Aug. 22. However, before enrollment, students are advised to first apply for financial aid.
