The Panthers’ tennis team struggled March 18 as they lost every match but one to the visiting Reedley College Tigers.

The college’s No. 1 men’s player Juan Ortiz, whose match against Reedley’s Daniel Remer was the longest of the day, won two sets to one. Ortiz was down in the first set but came back, pushing his opponent into mistakes.

On the women’s side, No. 1 doubles players Nadyzyea Stokes and Vanessa Van Der Valk fell 8-4 to the Tigers’ No. 1 team. The No. 2 women’s partners of Maliyah
Shavers and Brenda Saeturn lost 8-2.

“The goal is showing improvement,” said City College tennis coach Dave Griffin, “getting better as the season goes on and being ready for the conference tournament.”

The Big 8 Conference tournament begins in two weeks.

“Once it gets to be the conference tournament, it’s just like March Madness,” said Griffin. “Whoever is healthy and playing well, that’s who is going to qualify for state.”

No. 1 Stokes lost her two singles sets 6-4 and 6-3.

In the men’s singles, Hahn lost both sets 6-1 and No.3 Wilson lost 6-2 and 6-1.

Griffin said he was pleased with the way his team played, happy that his players did not give up despite scoring.

“To be down two breaks and be able to battle back was great,” said Griffin.
