Though City College recently began celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016, school spirit is still no guarantee. Midterm exams and transfer applications can cause stress and frustration for even the most academically gifted students.

For students who may need a motivational speech, the Student Senate and the Clubs and Events Board have collaborated to prepare an April 22 event full of such talks—Sac City Talks.

City College students and Sacramento community members are welcome to make eight-minute speeches to apply for spots at Sac City Talks, patterned after the popular TED Talks series.

In the words of Melisa Lasell, Student Senate secretary of Public Relations, the theme of these speeches is “The Next 100 Years of Progress.”

“That’s a very empowering thing that will allow speakers to work that into really any area,” Lasell said. “It’s wide open for people to interpret it how they want to.”

Development on this event began just before City College hit its 100th year. The Student Senate had ideas for a speech-oriented activity of this nature as early as October 2015. Sac City Talks’ use of the theme was designed to bring City College and its surrounding community together for the 100th anniversary, according to Lasell.

Lasell said the Senate is open to a variety of speech formats from those who have a “good idea” with an “engaging presentation.”

“It can be a talk, it can be a poetry slam, some sort of performance art,” Lasell said.

Along with a wide spectrum of presentation styles, people with diverse talents and characteristics are welcome to participate in Sac City Talks, Lasell said

Although the Student Senate plans to advertise Sac City Talks to the entirety of Sacramento, there will be a select number of spots reserved for City College students who plan on presenting, Lasell said.

There are also key note speakers from outside the community who will be scheduled to speak. Lasell said one speaker has already been confirmed, and two more are being considered.

Raymond Concha, a Student Senator, suggests that students who have never given a public speech before should consider participating in Sac City Talks.

“This is a good, positive stamp on my time at community college,” Concha says. “It’s a good event to gain experience from. Everyone needs to give some type of speech in their life.”

Georgia Sherman, Project and Events coordinator at the Clubs and Events Board, also feels that the event will benefit those seeking a local creative outlet.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students who are doing nothing,” Sherman said.

Students interested in speaking at Sac City Talks must send video submissions for approval to the Student Senate by March 15. Entries must be no longer than eight minutes, and should be sent to [email protected]. They will be reviewed by a team of 5 students, some involved with the Student Senate and the Clubs and Events Board.

Students will also have an opportunity for a live audition following March 15, according to Lasell.

Sac City Talks will be held April 22 at the Little Theatre from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sac-city-talks-a-community-event-tickets-21921765591?aff=efbbt.
