RISE program presents ‘Hope’ in Student Center Feb. 7

City College’s Respect Integrity Self-Determination and Education, RISE, program will be presenting a play on domestic violence in the Student Center Feb. 7 at noon.

The play is a one-act presentation called “Esperanza Means Hope” and is being presented in association with Kapitbahay/SeaFood City and My Sister’s House, a non-profit organization focused on addressing the needs of women and children impacted by domestic violence, according to their brochure.

The play was written by Conrad A. Panganiban and Gladys Imperio-Acosta and directed by Nicole C. Limon. The play also features original music by Dee Pizarro and Loui Paman.

The dean of City College’s Learning Resource Center, Rhonda Allison Rios Kravitz ,was recently awarded the I Love My Librarian Award, placing her among the top 10 librarians in the country, according to the American Library Association.

Fellow faculty members and City College students nominated Kravitz for this award because of her support of the library, student activities and the community during her 30 year career as a librarian.

“It’s working for the common good,” said Kravitz, who received the award over the winter break. “It’s making sure you enhance the lives of others. It isn’t ourselves; we are merely a reflection of the wonderful people around us.”

Kravitz has been a librarian since 1979 and has worked at City College since 2007. Aside from being one of 10 in the country to receive this award, she also won a $5,000 prize and stipend to travel to New York City to accept the award, Kravitz said.

The award ceremony event was hosted by the New York Times at the Times Center in a ceremony that included speakers Caroline Kennedy and Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Kravitz is the only west coast librarian to receive the prestigious award.

SCC Foundation scholarship program ends March 2

The SCC Foundation’s scholarship program is currently available and applications for awards ranging from $500 to $6,000 can be filled out online through March 2.

To qualify for a scholarship, students must have completed at least 12 units of classes at City College by fall 2011 and be currently enrolled in at least six units. Eligibility is not based on financial need. Applications must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on the final day.

According to Marcia Ortiz, administrative assistant with the City College Scholarship Foundation, students will need two letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf, one being from a City College faculty member. Some applications may ask for additional materials.

Ortiz said that “a lot of students are confused” because wait listed classes or classes taken on other campuses do not count toward the units needed for eligibility.

The awards will be disbursed in May and can be used for education-related expenses, including future semesters at City College or at another campus, Ortiz said.

Chris Iwata, Humanities and Fine Arts Division Dean, has been a member of the Recognition Events Committee for the past 15 years. Students who have good grades and declared majors have a good chance of getting selected, Iwata said.

Amanda Tomkins, a third-semester student at City College, hadn’t heard about the program until recently. Although she lives with her mother, she pays for the majority of her schooling and could use the financial assistance. She said she would consider applying as long as the application process is straightforward.

“I’m all for the simplicity,” Tomkins said.

According to Iwata, on occasion, money has been left over from the approximate 200 scholarships available in the past because not enough students apply.

“It wouldn’t hurt [to apply],” Iwata said. “You never know what you can get.”

Permanent stage in quad to debut soon

A new stage located in the City College Quad in front of the Student Center will host concerts, shows and other campus events and is on track to be completed by the first week of February, according to City College Director of Operations Greg Hayman.

Hayman said the new stage covers an area damaged by students who take the shortest path across the Quad. The stage will also replace old steam vents that are no longer in use and serve as a permanent structure to eliminate the need to set up portable stages.

“Assuming that the rain holds off and the workers can get in there, they should finish pretty soon and then just finish the railing, the last part of it,” Hayman says.

According to Hayman, the project was mostly kept in-house, using carpenters already employed with the Los Rios District. Including state fees and payments to the stage’s architect, the cost of the stage is estimated at $12,700.

“We will shoot two birds with one stone by building [a] permanent stage and saving on the cost of labor [for] rolling up [temporary] stages every time there is an event,” Hayman said.

Roen Afable, a beginning music student is already planning to play guitar on the stage sometime in the near future.

“It’s nice to see a permanent stage,” said Afable.

According to Hayman there is no inauguration ceremony planned once the stage is completed, but a few clubs are already planning on hosting events that will take advantage of the new stage.

“It will be interesting to see who schedules it first,” Hayman said.

City College student Jessica Nichols also hopes to one day use the stage as a place to showcase her talents.

“It’s amazing to see the size of the stage. It has a lot of room to host activities and I hope to dance on that stage,” Nichols said.

Come on out to the Dark Sky Star Party on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Observatory at the El Dorado Center of Folsom Lake College. The Dark Sky Star Party will be hosted by City College’s astronomy program. During this free event, attendees will be able to observe many objects in outer space, such as galaxies, planets and stars, with greater clarity because of the dark sky.

Be sure to check on the weather if you are planning to attend, as severe overcast or rain may cancel the event.
