Click to see our timeline of changing attitudes about sex

Continuing to define themselves as a kindler and gentler generation, Generation Y, those born in the United States between the years of 1977 and 2000, tend to be more tolerant of homosexuality and have a more relaxed attitude toward sex compared to past generations.
With the legalization of same-sex marriage in five states and the battle in California heating up, Generation Y will have the power to influence many of the proposed socio-political changes on ballots across the nation.

According to City College sociology professor Adrian Chevraux-Fitzhugh, the main reason for Generation Y’s tolerance of homosexuality is simple:  There is more accessible information about homosexuality.

“There are still pretty rampant rates of prejudice there,” Chevraux-Fitzhugh said, “but I definitely think you’re seeing an improvement in terms of tolerance.”

City College student and music major Aaron Moore, who works at Badlands, a bar that typically caters to the homosexual community in downtown Sacramento, said tolerance is location-oriented. According to Moore, in different towns there are general views of homosexuals that everyone agrees upon, but our society as a whole tends to become more liberal with every generation.

Chevraux-Fitzhugh said television and movies are portraying homosexuals more accurately now, whereas in the past, homosexual roles were generally characterized by stereotypes.

City College student and performing arts major Kevin Castro said men tend to be less accepting of homosexuals than women, because society and pop culture tell men that being a homosexual is being less than a man.

According to a report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in May 2009, 84 percent of women in the United States have sex before marriage and 91.3 percent of men in the United States have sex before marriage.

Kinesiology major Matt McCoul said he remembered when he was in the army and the practice of having sex with as many women as possible was normal.

“There is a healthy level of sex,” McCoul said, “but I think we are kind of irresponsible about it these days.”

City College student Derek Ludwig, 23, said that his peers have sex in a more recreational manner than past generations.

“Just live your life and let people live their life,” Castro said.
