The Yolo County Arts Exhibitions stopped April 8 at the City College West Sacramento Center, which was its second location.
This gallery, titled Positive Reflections: From Combat to Community. An Exhibition Inspired and Created by Veterans, is located on the third floor of the West Sacramento Center, features artwork from various local and regional veterans. The art on display depicts their experiences and celebrates their transition from combat to civilian life.
“We want it to touch as many people in Yolo County,” said Janice Parnell from the Yolo County Art Council. “We feel it’s really important for people to see and have a firsthand view of this very personal artwork.”
Parnell said that the art and stories at the exhibit will help visitors to connect on a deeper level with what the veterans went through.
An artist’s reception was held from 4-6 p.m. Visitors could look at the art and speak with the present artists about their work or to chat in general.

The reception also included blues music by Joe Lev and friends and a poetry reading for part of the second hour by Davis poet Laureate, Dr. Andy Jones.
“It’s very motivating and encouraging, and to have people come up to you and say they like it or ask questions about it certainly is what an artist wants to do, to communicate part of their being,” said freelance contract photographer Charles V. McDonald.
Art Perez, one of the artists featured in the show, said he was considered his ship’s artist when he was in service.
“I would do paintings on the boat covers and the side of the missiles,” said Perez. “I did a lot of paintings of the shipmates’ families, wives and girlfriends.”
Perez said inspiration for his painting came from a black-and-white photo that was taken on his ship.
The gallery will run through April 22 until its next stop at the Winters Branch Library on May 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
