Students get chance to study in Italy; Partnership allows for cultural experience abroad

City College students have the opportunity to study overseas in Florence, Italy, from late January to April, starting in spring 2017.

The Los Rios Community College District is partnering with the Northern California Study Abroad Consortium (NCSAC) and the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) to send City College students to Florence.

The entire program costs on average $11,000: $7,995 for room and board, tuition fees depending on enrollment, $1,361 for round trip flights from San Francisco International Airport to Florence, optional $475 for 30 meal vouchers redeemable at local restaurants, and optional insurance coverage through Ace American Insurance Company.

Emily Wilson, the City College art professor who will be teaching in Florence next spring, encourages students intimidated by the high cost of studying abroad to seek out financial aid.

“The cost is daunting, but funding is available,” said Wilson. “Many students don’t take advantage of the scholarships and grants available to students.”

In addition to BOG waivers, grants and loans, City College students can apply for scholarships available directly through AIFS. Students can check if they qualify for any grants or scholarships on AIFS’s website.

“I got to see the paintings and sculptures I was learning about which is one of the main reasons I wanted to go,” says Lesli Bryan, a psychology major who took part in the program and spent a semester in Florence in 2014.

Bryan said classroom lectures are incomparable to experiencing Italy in real life.

“I lived the Italian way of life,” she says. “I lived in an apartment next to other Italians and could see the main church of Florence, the Il Duomo di Firenze. It was glorious.”

City College will be also be sending students to Barcelona, Spain, in fall 2017.
