A City College student has been arrested twice since Oct. 6 for occupying Cesar Chavez Park in downtown Sacramento after the park closed at 11 p.m. as part of a nationwide protest.
An unknown number of protesters from City College joined Occupy Sacramento, affiliated with Occupy Wall Street, which began Sept. 17 in the financial district of New York. The movement has spread to cities across the country, including Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and now Sacramento, according to the Occupy Wall Street website.
Sean Thompson, 27, a bio-chemistry major and Associated Student Government senator at City College, said he and fellow protesters were exercising their First Amendment rights in a way that “caused no harm.”
“As a community we are staying together to let ourselves be known,” said Thompson. “I decided to stay [after the park closed Thursday and Sunday nights] because we were practicing our First Amendment rights despite the ordinance of the park. The violation of the ordinance caused no harm.”
Thompson noted inconsistency in the treatment he and other protesters received while in custody.
“The city police were very civil about it,” said Thompson. “We were both very accommodating to each other, but when we got to the county sheriff’s, they were rude and treated us like violent criminals. They threatened us and called us names— absolutely unprofessional.”
According to Thompson, the county sheriffs department held him and other detainees for eight hours, the maximum time allotted for their offense, without food or sleep.

Former ASG president and current ASG commissioner Justin Turner said that ASG does not condone Thompson’s actions.
“We do not support any students getting arrested for any reason. We do not want to send a message to our constituents or other student leaders that this is acceptable,” Turner said. “Everyone has the right to believe in their causes, but there is a proper way to do that.”
According to the Occupy Sacramento website, the protests will continue until Oct. 15, despite the fact that multiple protesters like Thompson have already been arrested. Twenty protesters were arrested Thursday night, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Occupy Sacramento is “organized by everyday citizens…,” according to its website. “This is a leaderless movement because hierarchical systems that deny people the chance to initiate changes hinder growth and morale.”
