Softball headlines a strong season for City College

Softball Panthers have an overall record of 41-7 this year.

“You have to have a large amount of experience,” says head coach Robert Maglione. “We always talk about our focuses. In ways we try to be positive so they will be ready to play before games.”

The state championships begin May 15 and will be held at the Salinas Sports Complex.

Baseball has an overall record of 22-16 and a record of 8-9 at the Big 8 Conference. Panthers ranked 17th in Northern California by the California Community Colleges Baseball Coaches Association (CCCBCA) as of April 16. The baseball team had a fast start, bolting to a 15-5 start though their first 20 games.

The men’s track team had a good start this season, placing the top three in its first three meets. This year’s team has a lot of very dedicated athletes.

“A runner has to have a heart, determination, good work ethic and talent to do well as a runner,” says head coach Robert Dewar.

The Nor Cal trials begin on May 1 in Diablo Valley, and the Nor Cal finals are on May 6. The top four finishers in each event make the state meet.

“We’re going to do well,” says a confident Dewar.

For women’s track, the Nor Cal finals are May 1 through May 8 at Diablo Valley and the state championships are on May 15-16 in San Mateo.

Men’s and women’s swimming conference championships were on April 16-18 at American River College.

This year the men’s and women’s swim teams set eight new City College records at the Big 8 Conference. “A swimmer has to be dedicated, have desire and a heart to go a long way,” says coach Jason Craighead.

Victoria Ramirez is definitely dedicated, as she set a new school record with the 50 Free and 50 breast and her time is ranked No. 13 in the country.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams are also reaching for the championships. The men have an overall record of 3-8, with a record of 3-5 in the Big 8 Conference.

The women have an overall record of 4-6 and are 3-4 in the Big 8 Conference. The NorCal tournament begins on April 30 and runs through May 2.
