In his first State of the Union address, President Barack Obama vowed to reform the broken health care system after saying, “We can no longer afford to put health care reform on hold.”

Many argue that it is not the state’s job to ensure our livelihood. Instead, it is our job and if we don’t do it, we deserve to be left behind. There will always be people who try to leech off the system, but it is counterproductive to make people who live on the threshold of poverty go without basic necessities for fear that some of them may “take advantage.”

This isn’t about allowing people to mooch off the system or perpetuating an attitude of entitlement. It is about preserving basic human rights.

If our people are healthy and well cared for, they are more likely to be productive citizens. If they do not receive the care they need, they will continue to exist in a state of mental and physical degradation.
