Alyssya Reed, the team’s only sophomore, set the tone for the Panthers’ win. Celebrated before the game and inserted into the starting lineup for just the fifth time all season, Reed knocked down a 3-pointer for the team’s first points of the game and tallied a season-high nine points.

“It was definitely bittersweet in the sense that this could be possibly be my last game that we play at home,” said Reed. “We tried to just be energized from the tip, trying to get the win.”

Head coach Julia Allender said that Reed is known for her commitment and investment into whatever team role is required of her.

It means a lot to me that she stuck to our process and didn’t quit. She plays hard with lots of energy, and she wants to win.”

Teammates have told Reed that she brings the most energy to the team, a true spark plug off the bench.

“Every team needs a motor,” said the 5-foot-2 Reed. “I’m thankful that a lot of people see that, and I’m glad that that’s something that I carry as an attribute as a basketball player. I just want to be remembered as the girl who always put in the work when we needed it, the girl who never gave up, the girl who was always picking up her teammates, the girl who just gave it all out.”

Freshman point guard Brandy Huffhines led the Panthers with a season-high 26 points against Folsom.

City was up by 5 points late in the third quarter until back-to-back 3-pointers by Maddison Coleman, including a buzzer-beater, lifted the Panthers to a 58-46 cushion heading into the fourth.

City moved to 8-8 in the Big 8 (11-15 overall) and now await the playoff brackets to be announced Feb. 19.

“If we can get another home playoff game, I would be ecstatic,” said Reed.
