“Something Wicked” this way has come

The latest play to come from City College’s native City Theatre, an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” opened Friday to a packed house at their temporary location, the California Stage at 2509  R St.

The story of the play mirrors that of the highly acclaimed novel by the brilliant science fiction pioneer. The two 13-year-old protagonists, Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway, played respectively by Caleb Salmon and Brandon Marques, live in a pre-World War II Midwestern American town that is visited by an eerie and mystical carnival around Halloween.

Terrorizing carnies erupt in halls of mirrors and an age-augmenting carousel, and finally possessing young Jim’s fancy. His best friend Will tries to gain the confidence of his own aging father, Mr. Halloway, played by George Sanford, and both kids get caught up in the carnival’s deadly approach to hiring.

The script, though true to the story of the 1962 science fiction milestone, falls somewhat short in its execution of the characters and subtext. However, Director Lori Ann Delappe-Grondin uses thr script to her advantage, making this her best work as director to date.

The versatile and often double or even triple cast ensemble played their parts together cohesively, making for creepy stage work filled with a carnival freak show that boasted such oddities as a prodigious bearded lady and a dog-boy, played respectively by John D. Crabtree and Christian Salmon.

Other notable performances of the show were Vernon Lewis as an enigmatic lightning rod salesman, Sanford as the father-knows-best dad, fully equipped with old-timey quips and idioms, and Cynthia Hawes as the hunched and dilapidated Dust Witch.

The set, designed by City Theatre Technical Director Shawn Weinsheink, consisted of multi-tiered platforms, a tried and true City Theatre convention, changed immensely by the use, albeit sometimes overuse, of projections to promote location, such as a sinister tree or books on the wall to suggest a library.

The play runs through Oct. 17, just in time to stir up Halloween shenanigans.
