Softball almost unbeatable

Strong team eyes state title

For the sixth year in a row — and 18 of the last 19 years — the Panthers are conference champs.

“There is no secret,” Coach Bob Maglione said. “It’s just hard work.”

The elements that made the team so successful this year were good pitching, good defense and timely hitting. But the main element was teamwork.

“As a coach, all you can do is encourage them to work hard with each other and be friends,” Maglione said. “You don’t have much say as a coach other than that. On the other hand, winning takes care of all of that.”

“We all click,” said first baseman Lindsey Bruno. “There’s nobody who absolutely hates each other on the team, which is pretty hard to come by when you have a group of girls.”

City style is a key component in their drive to win the state title. The team is now in the playoffs, which puts it in arm’s reach of its goal. However, coming close to the end of the season is a bittersweet experience for the team.

“ It’s going to suck,” Bruno said. “There’s really no other team that will compare to City.”

City College breezed through the first round of playoffs against Gavilan, and will start the second round May 9.
