City College students have until March 4 to sign up for the campus scholarship program.

Scholarships are available to new or returning students as long as they have completed at least 12 units, according to the City College website.

“Scholarships help students by giving them ease on their financial prices and other basic necessities,” said City College student Nestor Reyna.

Many types of scholarships are available. One of the new scholarships offered this semester for photography students is named after Russ Solomon, the founder of Tower Records. The idea for the scholarship came out of two photography shows created by Solomon that were held on campus last fall.

“Legends” and “Community”displayed photo portraits of Sacramentans shot by Solomon, an avid photographer and Sacramento native.  Donations during and after the shows have totaled $65,000, according to City College Public Services assistant Ann Love.

Students who are awarded scholarship money can use the funds for any college-related needs, such as food, supplies and transportation.

“I don’t know many students who aren’t qualified generally, who can’t find scholarships to apply for,” Love said.

Many students struggle with paying for the overwhelming cost of a college degree.

“Scholarships give some sense of financial security in terms of paying for their education,” said City College student Rhoda Bongo. “It releases some of the financial burden placed onto them and their lives.”

Scholarships also give opportunities to students from lower income homes in affording many of the necessities they need.

“They’re important for the underprivileged kids,” said City College student Kevin Werre. “They need a helping hand, whereas the privileged don’t need as much help.”

Recently City College has changed its policy of applying for scholarships by allowing students to apply with only one letter of recommendation from a City College faculty member. This recent change makes applying simpler for students in need of financial aid.
