Scholarship applications due Feb. 26

Donations to the Sacramento City Scholarship Foundation make it possible for students to receive additional funding for their education this spring, regardless of financial need.

There are currently 177 scholarships that total $100,000 available to City College students.

The Student Scholarship Fund is made possible by donations from faculty, staff, and administrators of the college. Donors include retired faculty and staff that spent many years working or teaching at City College. The foundation also receives donations from businesses, family foundations and community organizations, said Mary M. Leland, executive director of the Sacramento City College Foundation.

Contributors can donate while honoring a loved one or leaving a “named legacy,” but ultimately they understand and want to help with student needs, explained Leland.

“With the rising costs of textbooks, need for personal computers and high cost of living in California, they understand students must rely on a variety of financial resources to be successful in attaining their college education,” said Leland.

Many donors want to fund students in particular areas of study and have specific challenges such as single parent students or those with learning disabilities, said Leland.

Bryana Blythe, Photojournalism and English major, said that scholarships would benefit her education and help her out with college expenses.

Students that are awarded scholarships can use the funds for any expenses related to their education.

“We believe students have their own specific needs; such as transportation costs, textbooks, paying fees or childcare costs. We know they can make the best decisions about how to use the scholarship funding to stay in school,” said Leland.

All City College students who’ve completed at least12 units by the end of fall 2009 and are currently enrolled in a minimum of 9 units for spring 2010, are encouraged to apply for scholarships by Feb. 26.

Two letters of recommendation are required and at least one must be from a Faculty member. Certain scholarships may require a third letter of recommendation.

International students are encouraged to apply if they meet the minimum enrollment requirements.

Students transferring to another school or to a four-year university are also eligible to receive scholarships. Most scholarships are not restricted to transfer students only, which makes them available to students in both categories said Leland.

Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) isn’t required to apply for City College scholarships, which means that any student can apply for a scholarship regardless of financial need said Jeannette Solorio, City College financial aid officer.

“We require a personal statement explaining education and career goals, plus recommendation letters from a faculty member,” said Leland. “These requirements make the scholarship award process competitive and based on successful work, not just financial need.”

Applications, instructions, requirements and scholarship lists are available online. Students can apply for scholarships by completing the online application at http://scholarship.losrios.edu. For help completing the application process, students can contact the Sacramento City College Foundation at 916-558-2197.

All applicants will receive a letter notifying them of the status of their application in April. The letter will notify students whether they will receive a scholarship.

An awards ceremony honoring scholarship recipients will take place on Tuesday, April 27.

Applications are due Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, by 4:00 p.m.
