Despite the threat of rain, City College’s biannual Club Day went on as planned Feb. 27. Tables were set up throughout the room, full of information that alerted students to new social outlets, potential careers and plenty of free food. Sac City Feminists made its debut as a club last semester, and, according to Jackson, made a strong impression this year, basking in the afterglow of their recent Sex + City event.
Sex + City was the club’s first major event on campus, hosted in collaboration with the Sac City Freethinkers, the Sociology Club, and the Queer Straight Alliance (QSA). The four-day event presented a series of talks and panels that sought to address sex as a natural and enjoyable part of life.
Although some may believe that feminism is only a women’s issue, its core beliefs advocate for gender equality, not female dominance. For that reason, the Feminists’ Club welcomes people of all genders and backgrounds.
“Anyone can be a feminist,” Jackson says. “Men, women, people outside the binary – anyone is included.”
A Facebook page with 77 likes, as well as support from the Freethinkers and Queer Straight Alliance clubs, has helped propel the new club into the spotlight.
The club aims to bring feminism onto the campus, educate, raise awareness, and to provide a safe place to discuss ideas.
The Sac City Feminists’ Club meets for ideas and community, says Jackson. “The average meeting is just students getting together and discussing ideas, plans for events, current events relating to gender issues.”

Jackson has high hopes for the club’s potential to make great things happen on campus.
“I think it brings whatever the students in the club bring to it,” says Jackson. “Hopefully, we can gather more members, gather more feminists, and bring feminism more onto campus because there are some things that we feel are lacking.”
Jackson specifies a lack of gender-neutral restrooms as the next item the club wants to tackle.
“The only one is in the Health Center,” says Jackson. “That’s completely ridiculous.”
Sac City Feminists meet Thursdays at 1 p.m. in varying locations both on and off campus, including several impromptu meetings set up via the club’s Facebook page. Weekly meetings are currently being held in LRC 119.
“I want to have a place for people who are feminists—who believe in gender equality, rights for women, and queer rights—to gather and have a community and a safe space on campus,” Jackson said. “An actual community, not just a ‘come to the club once a week’ thing.”
