City College’s softball team swept Big 8 Conference opponent San Joaquin Delta College in a double header at home March 22 in The Yard for final scores of 10-9 and 3-2 respectively.

Game one began with a monstrous first inning for the Panthers. The team totaled nine runs and nine hits in the inning.

Shortstop Mickey Loveridge started the game with a three-run home run to deep center field and added one more RBI before the inning ended. Catcher Allie Cheetham and Outfielder Megan Winton both had RBIs in the inning, and second baseman Stephanie Bagwell scored a run after getting on base from a fielding error.

In the bottom of the second inning, Delta began to mount a comeback, getting three runs on four hits. The team ended the inning with three runners left on base.

City College would go on to score one more run in the game off a home run from designated hitter Noelani Kakalia.

After two earned runs in the fifth inning, Panthers’ coach Tim Kiernan made a pitching change, bringing in Jordan Petersen for starter Ashten Welch. Delta would continue to rally, getting three more runs before ending the fifth with two runners left on base.

Petersen pitched for one inning before Welch came back into the game in the sixth.

Delta would close in on City College in the seventh inning, getting one more run to bring the score to 10-9.

Despite the Bear Cubs mounting a comeback, City College would end the game in spectacular fashion.

With two runners on first and second base for Delta, infielder Maryanne Peluso hit a fly ball to right field. Winton would catch the ball and get the out. The runners had too large of a lead to get back to first and second base and were both tagged out resulting in a rare triple play to end the game.

“We’ve got to spread our scoring out a little bit,” Kiernan said after the game. “We had a great first inning and got nine runs and then we hit a home run, but that was about it.”

The second game proved to be just as exciting down the stretch, but was dominated by great pitching and defense.

Pitcher Meghan Wantz started the game for the Panthers. She would go on to pitch six shutout innings.

After four scoreless innings for the Panthers, Kiernan would bring in Cheetham for Courtney Davis—who started the second game as catcher.

Cheetham would go on to hit a RBI single in the fifth inning to put the Panthers on the board.

City College scored two more runs in the sixth inning behind the bats of first baseman Taylor Martinez and left fielder Nicole Miller. Both Martinez and Miller had had RBIs.

Wantz’ lone mistake came in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving up a two-run home run to designated hitter Jamie Costa.

“Meghan (Wantz) was outstanding in the last game,” said Kiernan. “One bad pitch, but it didn’t hurt her.”

Wantz would go on to retire the next batter and end the game, getting the sweep on the day for the Panthers.

Pitchers Welch (10-2) and Wantz (8-1) both get credited with wins on the day.

Two close games between conference rivals put the Panthers in second place in the conference. City College looks to take on first-in-conference Sierra College for the lead March 29 at home.
