Since 2012, Sacramento has become the home of Aftershock, the annual rock music festival that brings the heaviest hitters in the business to our town.

This year’s Aftershock was held at Gibson Ranch Park on Oct. 24-25.

The venue location was much bigger and better than its original Discovery Park location making this year’s festival different than previous years.

The lineup for this Aftershock included a combination of genres. The headlining bands included Slipknot, Marlyn Manson and Sacramento’s own Deftones, as well as other popular bands.

The overcast, relatively cool first day had me worried after experiencing the dust problem at last year’s festival. There was dirt everywhere, once again, which may not seem like a big deal, but when there’s dust in the air, it’s hard to have a good time without choking.

Once I got through the line and inside I walked around the venue until I found a program realizing that the well-known bands weren’t going to play until about 3 p.m. I had plenty of time to explore.

I stumbled upon a huge canvas that was splattered with paint and saw that the art was from people at the concert. It was something that I’ve never seen at a festival. Granted Aftershock is no Coachella, but it was noteworthy.

After looking into the painting further I found out that Aftershock partnered with Liquitex Professional, an art supply company and Juxtapoz Projects to bring concert-goers a Make Your Mark art zone.

The first band I watched, Beartooth, played on the Coors Light stage, and like all the other times I have seen them, they didn’t disappoint

After Beartooth, the day went by much faster.

I watched Hollywood Undead, Black Veil Brides, Breaking Benjamin, Bring Me The Horizon, and Marilyn Manson making the first day of Aftershock a success, and keeping me on my toes for Sunday.

The next day I was running behind schedule, but luckily I got there just in time to catch Issues perform. Throughout the day I watched Failure, Sleeping With Sirens, Eagles of Death Metal, All Time Low, Stone Temple Pilots, Death From Above, 1979, Coheed and Cambria, and Jane’s Addiction.

This year’s Aftershock was definitely different from the others. The lineup was more diversified. Not all the bands strictly heavy metal bands.

According to KCRA News, in the coming years the festival is expected to expand into a three-day event bringing in over 45,000 people.

If Aftershock does change as expected it could affect everything from the lineup and venue, to ticket prices and hours.
