Sacramento Regional Transit reaches out to City College

Sacramento Regional Transit representatives provided information for students and received public responses to proposed changes to its services on March 8 at the City College light rail station.

“We want to give our customers an opportunity to tell us what they think,” said Michael Wiley, General Manager/CEO of Sac RT.

A set of service recommendations were made by Sac RT and will be presented to its board members for approval in September, according to Wiley. Others in attendance at the TransitRenewal booth were Sac RT’s Manager of Marketing and Communication Devra Selinis, Eligibility Specialist Sarah Poe and Assistant Planner Chris Pair.

The group provided a place for Regional Transit riders to review and comment on the recommended improvements in the five-year service analysis outline. Some of the service recommendations were displayed on poster boards, which surrounded the booth.

In addition to giving information about service changes, the representatives also offered surveys for riders to comment on services. The feedback will be taken to Sac RT board members to include in future planning in development, said Selinis.

“I hope they stick to what they are doing,” said Dominique Johnson, part-time student at City College. Johnson explained he’s had to wake up and catch the bus two hours earlier than usual in order to make it to work on time.

The Proposed Year 1 Service Changes of the TransitRenewal plan covers 2012 through 2017 and featured maps including, “conceptual plans” for Sacramento’s Central City Community, Rancho Cordova and the Pocket/Land Park Communities.

The TransitRenewal booth offered free booklets with bus route schedules, cards with fare and contact information and Blue Line and Gold Line Fact sheets.

According to Wiley, Sac RT workers were at the booth to identify that “service recovery” was cut back in June 2010 because of financial difficulties. That same year, the operating budget went from $147 million to $107 million per year, dropping 20 percent in 2012.

Sac RT solved financial difficulties, said Wiley, after sales tax receipts increased, making sales taxes grow faster than expenses.

According to Wiley, board members held a public hearing on March 12 where outreach information was shared. Additional information from that meeting will be included in further discussion of RT’s revision plans on April 9.

“People are reliant on accurate information because not everyone can drive or has a car,” said Johnson.

During the event, some passers-by were concerned about bus schedules while others were hoping for regulatory changes.

“A lot of changes affect American Disabilities Act riders so hopefully we see changes that will allow more people to use Sac RT,” said Poe.
