Staff and faculty assemble for convocation

City College staff and faculty returned from winter break Jan. 19 and discussed how to stay attuned to student needs despite the grim news about budget cuts.

Although the event was directed toward City College staff, faculty and administration, the issues were relevant to the entire campus community.

The early portion of the convocation was marked by welcoming new staff and faculty with bouquets, obligatory introductions, and a musical serenade by the City College Choir. There was also important business discussed. Among the more important topics covered was the passing of a new education bond.

“A lot of people thought 2008, with the sort of financial meltdown, was a real downer. But for us, it actually had a bright lining,” said Brice Harris, Los Rios District chancellor, in reference to the $475 million bond.

Harris explained that the passage of the bond last year would lead to the fast-tracking of various Los Rios projects, which in turn, should stimulate local industry.

According to Harris, the money received by City College would go into the refurbishment of Hughes Stadium.

The convocation also welcomed special guest presenter Arleen Arnsparger, project manager for the Community College Survey of Student Engagements, an organization specializing in surveys that measure how students learn in California’s community colleges.

“If you really want to understand what students are telling you, you’ve got to ask them and have a conversation,” Arnsparger said to the audience.

Keeping true to her advice, Arnsparger welcomed four City College students and led a group discussion about student perspectives, touching on what students feel is good and bad about the campus and what works for them.

Art Harris, business major, explained his preference for engaging teachers who “draw information from you, not just give you a book, and then have you sit in class as they lecture all day.”

“For me, it helps a lot when the instructor is more diverse in teaching and is having activities or putting us together in groups,” said City College student Delila Perez. “Some instructors have their own style, but I believe it’s very important for them to apply every learning style to their students.”
