Recognizing, respecting, remembering

Once upon a time, long ago, the state of California belonged to the country of Mexico. When Mexico surrendered California to the United States in 1848, it did not remove the Hispanic influence—walking the streets of California it is evident everywhere.

City College will continue to celebrate the contributions and influence of the Hispanic culture through Oct. 15. Hispanic Heritage Month is observed nationwide from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

“It’s important to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month so people aren’t ignorant about it,” says City College student Sonia Chavez. “So they understand where Hispanics are coming from. The point being, so people are sympathetic and empathetic to another culture.”

The Chicano and Latino Faculty and Staff Association and the Cultural Awareness Center are having their fall semester Chicano and Latino Student Welcome Reception. This event will be in the Student Center on Oct. 13 at noon and all students are welcome to attend.
