Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society decided the next City College chapter governing body  by a majority vote May 8.

City College’s Beta Eta Psi chapter of PTK elected five new officers from among nine to leadership positions by a hand-counted vote at the honor society’s chapter meeting Thursday in the City Cafe. No candidate ran opposed.

By majority vote, PTK’s 2014-15 Beta Eta Phi City College chapter officers  will be:

Wantakan (Nikkii) Arcado, president
Johanna R. Bankston, executive vice president
Ty Perez, vice president for Sustainability
Kevin Luong, vice president of Scholarship and Fellowship
Earl Kho, vice president of Public Relations and Technology
Brenna Grey, treasurer & fundraiser

A goal the incoming leaders hope to accomplish during their term is sustainability for the City College campus. However, the team is looking at the matter realistically. While the new chapter leaders understand total sustainability isn’t achievable before their terms end, Perez said training he received as an activist will be helpful.

“Although we may not be able to change the world tomorrow, we can set the precedent for change today,“ said Perez.

Current Executive Vice President of Beta Eta Psi Tashi Nacario said the newly elected chapter leaders have what it takes to act as a catalyst for change.

“Many of them have been helping in events in the past year,” said Nacario. “They have already bonded and there should be a lot of cooperation [among themselves].”

Still, another factor contributes to the incoming leaders’ probability of success. City College’s honors program coordinator Professor Paul Frank identified that factor as internal accountability.

“I’m not worried about this group because they’re going to make sure each one of them does the work,” said Frank.

Such work includes making efforts to increase student awareness of the benefits honor society members enjoy, as well as educating each officer of the duties specific to his or her position and how to carry out those duties well. According to Arcado, who goes by Nikkii, having a full grasp of what each person’s role entails is critical to the success of the newly elected governing body.

“Everyone has to have a set of responsibilities they need to understand and undertake,” said Arcado.

Arcado further said the goal is attainable and will have a hand in achieving yet another goal shared by the elects, albeit one more personal than of governance.

“We are honor students for a common purpose,” said Arcado. “We have ambition, but our goals are not only to transfer to a four-year university. [We also want] to bring out the better in ourselves.”
