Pieces satisfies late-night, midday pizza cravings

Pieces+satisfies+late-night%2C+midday+pizza+cravings

Pizza. The versatile yet simplistic food has captured people’s hearts for what seems like forever. With a pizzeria on almost every corner, what we look for in a pizza often determines where we go to find it.

People love to reference the old adage “bad pizza is still pretty good” when attempting to excuse a choice that allows quantity over quality, or just inexpensive tasteless versions of classic simple pizzas.

Those kinds of choices would have Gennaro Lombardi rolling over in his grave. Lombardi was the Italian immigrant credited with opening the first American pizzeria, Lombardi’s, in New York City in 1905.

There have been a lot of pizzerias in the Midtown and Downtown Sacramento that are recently hurting pizza’s good name by promoting artisan style pies that boast fruit infusion, super-thin crust and strange meat and cheese combinations, that are frankly, overwhelming and unappealing.

These artisan pizzas are often on the same level as Dominos and Little Cesar’s in the flavor department (or lack there of), but heavy on the wallet.

Pieces Pizza on 21st Street is a Midtown staple for many, and not one of the aforementioned places.

The small pizzeria has a wide variety of pizza by the slice, as well as build-your-own-slice options for the more ambitious. The casual atmosphere is calm during the day, but if you choose to go at night, prepare for a raucous crowd of bar patrons finishing off their night with a slice.

The brightly painted walls and the great blues and rock ‘n’ roll music being played almost makes the restaurant feel like it isn’t in the city. Almost as if it belongs in some small town and not at the bustling 21st Street location it calls home.

I ordered a slice of pesto veggie pizza and a pesto bun, a new creation from Pieces that doesn’t have a set price on yet. At the time, it was only $1, and it was $1 well spent.

The veggie pesto slice was delicious. Topped with fresh veggies including yellow squash, tomatoes, olives and spinach. This slice almost makes you think your meal is a healthy one. With a delicious blend of feta, mozzarella and pesto underneath the veggies, it boasts big, garden fresh flavor.

The pesto bun was delicious, too, but if anything, it was the evil stepbrother to the healthier pesto slice. It was similar to a cinnamon roll, but instead of sugar, it was filled with a sinful blend of pesto, garlic and cheese, melting together into a beautiful crispy indulgence.

The prices of pizza slices range from $3 to $8, and for those with large appetites, the slice is about the same size as a small or personal pizza at many competing pizzerias, making the price very competitive.

Pieces is located at 1309 21st St. in Midtown and offers a variety of delicious and affordable options. The pizzeria has become a Midtown staple for people who enjoy pizza by the slice. The place is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight during the week and until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays. Happy hour is daily, featuring reduced prices on slices and many local craft beers. On any day over 100 degrees, or if it is raining, happy hour lasts all day.
