City College volleyball defeated the Gavilan College Rams, 3-1, and the Lassen College Cougars, 3-1, in the Panthers’ Sept. 12 home opening Quad event, extending their win streak to five games.
In the first game, ball control was mostly dominated by scoring from the Panthers, outscoring Gavilan 100- 82 in four matches. After winning the first two matches, Gavilan won the third 25-23, making it difficult for the Panthers to take it all.
“When the pressure was on in the fourth set and it could have been either of our games just get in control and remain in control. Fight for every point,” said Panthers head coach Laurie Nash.
Even with the game going in favor of City College, the scoring throughout wasn’t clearly decided. There were many points that were disputed, more noticeably from Gavilan’s side of the court. However, the Panthers knew to not let the unfavorable scoring get to them and kept their minds set on winning, according to Nash.
“I think the question was the validity of the line judges, so because they’re inexperienced and this is our first home match, we’re trying to develop that position,” said Nash. “There were some missed calls, but I don’t think those missed calls were what changed the development of the game.”
Nash credits defense as one of the biggest reasons for the victory. In the first two sets, the Panthers outscored the Rams 25-18 and 25-14, respectively.
“I felt like it was a group effort, honestly. I felt like our defense was really strong in the beginning,” said Nash. “The first two sets we were block touching a lot of balls, we were transitioning, and I felt like we served really well. Our setter was pretty consistent for location and the speed.”
The Panthers work well together as a unit, getting to the ball quickly, serving and blocking at the net. The support from setter Kassidy Rauh and her game high 33 assists played a role in the team’s success. Many of the points by City College happened by way of streaks, which helped contribute to their victory.
“That’s probably something we actually struggle with, is to maintain point streaks ourselves.” said outside hitter Katie Haley, who had the second highest kill percentage at .364.

Streaks were a large part of the Panthers victory in Game 2 against Lassen, scoring 13 straight points in the first match and 11 straight points in the second before winning 25-14 and 25-15. Much like the game against Gavilan the Panthers struggled on the attack in the third match, and lost 25-23.
“In the first and second match, I thought they were very similar in that we controlled the ball in the first two sets. We controlled the serve and the pass, and then we were a little bit complacent in the third,” said Nash.
Despite losing control of the game in the third match, the Panthers rallied in the fourth and won convincingly, 25-15. For the second time in the day, Rauh led both teams in assists with 37. Haley had another strong showing with a .326 kill percentage on 20 kills, a game high.
According to Nash, the team has several things to work on before the next two games against De Anza College and Shasta College, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the Panthers will look to continue their winning streak.
“[We need to practice our] intensity and keeping it consistent throughout the entire set. We need to start finishing teams in that third set,” said Nash. “I feel like, even if we were behind, we could have still moved ahead at the right time and close it out. We need to work on closing it out.
“We need to serve tougher. In order for us to beat stronger teams. We’ve got to get teams out of system,” she added, “which means that we serve tougher, and we go for it, because I feel like we’re a strong blocking team. We’ve got pretty good defense, but there’s times where we can’t put the ball away.”
