City College volleyball team put on a progressing performance, winning two matches and losing two matches at the Delta Classic Tournament Friday Sept. 9 and Saturday Sept.10 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

“We played solid,” said Laurie Nash, City College head volleyball coach, regarding the match against Sierra College.

The Panthers started off strong winning against the College of Siskiyous.

They then lost two close matches, which required tie-breakers, to conference rival San Joaquin Delta College and Feather River College. The last match was closed with up and down moments, winning against rival Sierra College.

“We played all around solid. We played with team chemistry [and] high energy,” Nash said. “I thought we were executing plays a lot.”

This was English and pediatrics major Payton Fine’s first tournament, which was a different competitive structure for her, she said, but she enjoyed it.

Returning player Megan Pollock, biological sciences major, said she believes that playing four matches in a tournament is a good opportunity to work out the kinks of teamwork.

Nash and the team said they agree with each other that connecting as a team is going to take time and said they hope to make a strong finish at the end of the season.

“We have a lot of potential,” said Tiffany Khrommel, undeclared. “I just wish we had a little bit more drive. Our team needs to be ready, and we need to want to win.”

The team is composed of more freshmen than returning sophomores so acquiring well-synced teamwork and communication is crucial, according to Nash.

Tori Nunez, also undeclared, said she believes the team as a whole plays good technical volleyball, but said it needs to work on communicating well and keep communicating during game-play.

“The goal is to get a good pass, get a good set, and kill the ball,” said Nunez. “And that’s what we need to remember all the time.”

Another problem several of the players agree to work on, they said, is closing a game where they have a lead.

“I feel like volleyball is like a big game of momentum and when we lose that momentum it’s hard to get it back,” Pollock said.

Nash said she believes that once the team or the opposing team gets to 20 points, there is a sense of urgency.

“We start off strong, and then it’s like a roller coaster, we get to 20 [points] and we don’t close,” said Emily Seros, business major and communication minor.

A downward roller coaster was evident in the first and second games against Sierra, but the team pulled through and maintained a positive attitude.

“I’m happy with the way I played,” said Akeya Maddox, business major. “I need to work on some stuff, but that’s volleyball. You get better with every game.”

College of Siskiyous results were, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-15.

The scores for matches between San Joaquin Delta College and Feather River College were 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 10-15, and 19-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-16, 12-15, respectively.

Sierra College results were, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21.
