Panthers playoff run falls short in overtime

City College overcame a seven-point deficit in the final minute and 30 seconds of their Nor-Cal Regional Playoff game Feb. 22 against West Hills to take the game to overtime. City College eventually lost the game, 64-60.

Sophomore forward Zach Bartley, who scored 222 points and had 177 total rebounds on the year according to TeamPages.com, was the biggest offensive producer of the game with 21 points.

“I think jitters, the jitters of being in the playoffs for the first time since, I believe, ’05 was probably why we had some of the turnovers, but the threes [by West Hill] really beat us,” Bartley said.

The three-pointers Bartley referred to were the ones scored by the West Hill Falcons forward Darius Gordon. He had 23 points in the game.

Head Coach Andrew Jones believes that mental errors and the ability to make shots down the stretch led to the Panthers loss in overtime.

“We were lazy a few times and got caught in transition,” Jones said. “They were able to make their free throws.”

Bartley said that the team played nervously at times, because it was the first time in years that the Panthers have made it to the playoffs.

Although sophomore Guard Izzy King and freshman guard DeSean Atkins were tied for second highest Panthers scorer against the Falcons with eight points each, but Bartley was the only player  in double digits points for City College as opposed to four players scoring 10 or more for West Hills.

“[Bartley] went All League, he’s one of our leading scorers,” Jones said of Bartley’s season performance. “He had a good season and his rebound-put back [to tie the game at 54] big for us.”

Jones spoke after the game about the respect he has for his team and the way the players picked up their performances at the end of the year, especially after losing the team’s leading scorer.

“Six, seven games ago we lost our leading scorer and the team really picked it up,” Jones said. “I just commend and respect the way the team came together and finished the year.”

Although the Panthers lost in their final game of the season, Bartley had some lasting words for the City College basketball team and coaching staff.

“My time here has been a family oriented experience,” Bartley said. “I have felt like part of a family at Sac City, I loved coming to practice and playing games with this team and staff. I feel like these guys are my brothers, my family.”
