The City College men’s basketball team kept its playoff hopes alive Friday night with a win over Sierra College. The Panthers now sit firmly on the playoff bubble going in to Monday’s California Community College Athletic Association selection committee meeting, when the playoff bracket will be set.

The Panthers came strong out of the gate, riding tough defense play to a six-point lead by the midway point of the opening period.

Guard Antwoine Davis and forward Bobby Barnes (ranked first and second in the Big 8 in scoring) were both forced to sit out much of the first half with foul trouble. Point guard Kenny Woodard and forward Pat Lowman picked up the slack though, each putting up 14 points in the first half.

“Kenny [Woodard] played outstanding, he really grew up as a point guard the last two weeks,” said Panthers head coach Andrew Jones.

The Panthers pulled away as the first-half came to a close. An 11-5 run in the final 5:14 stretched the Panthers lead to nine points at the end of the opening period.

A 16-5 run by the Wolverines to open the second half tied things up at 47 with 12:24 remaining. The teams would trade baskets until, with about seven minutes to go, the Panthers began to pull away.

City College would go on to outscore the Wolverines 17-9 in the final four minutes, giving the Panthers an 86-68 victory.

Woodard led the team with 23 points, continuing his late season improvement (Woodard is averaging 19 points over the last four games.)

“I just wasn’t going to let that be my last game,” said Woodard after the game.

Forward Pat Lowman also contributed heavily, scoring 21 points to go along with a strong showing on defense.

“Lowman was just a beast out there,” said Jones.

With the win, the Panthers are hopeful they will be selected for the playoff bracket. Teams will be judged based on strength of schedule, quality of wins, and win-loss record in division and overall play. The Panthers (7-7) are in fifth place in the Big 8 and will likely earn a spot in a play-in game if they are selected.
