Panthers lose by one run to state champs

City College’s baseball team lost to the defending state champions, Ohlone College Renegades, Tuesday Feb. 15, 7-6, at Union Stadium. When the Panthers came to bat in the second inning, they were already down six runs, but got two of their own to nibble away at the lead.

After two runs in the fifth to make the score 6 – 4, City College got its first home run of the year from catcher Joe Setum. That solo shot brought the Panthers to within one run. After five scoreless innings, City College allowed one run in the eighth.

The Panthers put a small rally together in the ninth with a leadoff walk, a single and a sacrifice fly to finish off the game 7-6.

The Panthers have faced three of the top four teams in Northern California to start their season. Ohlone is still ranked fourth in the polls after losing their coach, Jordan Twohig, to the University of Washington. The Panthers are ranked fifth.

For its next game, City College baseball will travel out of town Feb. 17 to play the College of San Mateo for a
non-conference game.
