City College women’s basketball team’s winning streak came to a screeching halt Jan. 22 at the hands of Santa Rosa Junior College.

City College came into the game riding a four-game winning streak with an overall record of 16-4. The Panthers were ranked AP7th in Northern California, with Santa Rosa ranked 10th in the CCCWBCA North Region Poll. Despite the loss, longtime Panthers fan Randy Hicks says the team is definitely playing better than season.

“They are playing fantastic!” Hicks said. “They know how to comeback and they hit free throws.”

City College couldn’t find the rim to start the game and found themselves in a double-digit hole early in the first quarter. They would only score 14 points by halftime.

The second half was more of the same, with Santa Rosa running up the score. Missed open layups, combined with Santa Rosa firing on all cylinders, made hopes of a comeback slim. The Panthers tried to shooting the ball from beyond the arch to cut into the deficit, but the shots just wouldn’t fall.

City College was only able to cut the lead to 13 points in the fourth quarter, after the team began to make their shots. The Panthers lost the game 64-49 and the team’s head coach Julia Allender said she wasn’t happy with their overall performance.

“I thought we had poor effort,” Allender said. “We weren’t very tough. We need to play better, tougher basketball.”

There were some bright spots for City College, according to Allender. Two players she thought stood out: sophomore guards Corina Tacardon and Jasmine Bernardo.

“Bernardo was a lot more aggressive, and Tacardon had a better second half,” said Allender.

The Panthers next home game is Feb. 2 against Modesto Junior College.
