City College baseball has a long tradition of success. The team has made 16 appearances in the State Championship game and won five times. Since 1979 it has had 299 players drafted into the major leagues. So when you go to a Panthers baseball game at City College, you know you’re going to get a good show.

Even if you aren’t interested in baseball, going to a Panthers game is always a joy to watch because of the players’ skill. Every student at City College should go to watch a baseball game at Union Stadium at least once. The atmosphere at the games is always pleasant and friendly, and City College students should show pride in supporting their fellow students. What’s more, students get into games for free with a current ID.

When I saw that the team was playing its season opener against Fresno City (another big-time program that has won five state championships), I knew that it would be a great night for baseball. In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers got the crowd cheering as they scored four runs. Fresno battled back with two back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the seventh, but that would be all for them as City scored four more runs in the eighth. Final score, Panthers-9, Fresno City-3.

Does the runner on first have a big lead? There are so many small details that go into the game.

And going to a game at City College is as close to professional major league baseball as you are going to get without the overpriced food and highly paid superstars. The Panthers are blessed to have arguably some of the nicest facilities in the state. I was a pitcher for Los Medanos College years ago, so I have been around to see plenty of ball fields.

Now, as a fan in the stands, I find watching the Panthers an enjoyable experience. The mix of people is well balanced between, family, faculty, students and scouts. And although I’m not down on the field participating anymore, City College has such a high level program that it draws me in and makes me feel as if I were still playing.
