Panthers football struggles against College of the Siskiyous

The City College Panthers football team has had a rough season, reflected by its six-game losing streak after winning the season opener.

On Oct. 19, the Panthers lost to the College of the Siskiyous Eagles 31-13 in a game marred by miscues and mistakes.

The loss to the Eagles also leaves the Panthers with a 0-2 record in the Mid-Empire Conference, 1-6 overall.

The Panthers’ offense, lead by freshman quarterback Jordan Ares, struggled to find traction. Ares completed 23 of 33 passes for 202 yards, earning a touchdown and giving up two interceptions.

Ares, third-string quarterback, is seeing action after injuries took out first and second quarterbacks Taylor Laird and Justin Moore respectively.  The Panthers were unable to sustain offensive momentum after the lone offensive touchdown drive, which took 13 plays and 79 yards, in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, sophomore defensive lineman Sheldon Callender scooped a fumble by the Eagles offense and returned it for a touchdown 57-yard touchdown. Raymond Coen, City College sophomore defensive lineman, caught an interception in the second quarter but the offense failed to score on the turnover.

The physically dominant Eagles owned the line of scrimmage, pushing around both offense and defensive lines of the Panthers. The offensive line of the Panthers only gained 98 yards on running plays and gave up five sacks. By comparison, the Eagles offense that gained 206 yards rushing.
