The light breeze that rolled into Hughes Stadium Oct. 17 wasn’t enough to cool down the Sierra College Wolverine’s offense as they beat City College 42-16 in the season’s first Nor-Cal League game.

Sierra’s offense attacked early, scoring first on a 3-yard touchdown run by the quarterback to cap off an 80-yard drive in the first quarter. City College’s offense, on the other hand, struggled to get anything going offensively and failed to get a single first down in the first quarter.

Things didn’t get any better for the Panthers’ offense in the second quarter, as they failed to take advantage of some key stops by the defense. At halftime, the Panthers had yet to complete a single first down and were losing 28-0.

“That’s the story of the game right there, no energy, no effort, just flat, very flat,” said City College head coach Dannie Walker.

The start of the second half was just as flat as the first half for the Panthers. On the first play from scrimmage quarterback Taylor Laird, his pass tipped at the line and was intercepted by the Wolverines defensive back. The Panthers finally got on the board, however, after the special teams unit blocked the extra point and Raphael Lewis picked up the loose ball to return it for a safety.

Things got chippy late in the third quarter, as both teams began jawing back and forth, resulting in multiple penalty flags. Panthers’ wide receiver Lamar Sample was flagged for two unsportsman-like penalties and ejected from the game.

Things became so heated between the two teams that Sierra College head coach Ben Noonan decided to get his team off the field without shaking hands with the City College players.

“I just thought it was a better idea with all the personal fouls that had gone on. I just didn’t want anything negative to happen during the handshake with either team,” said Noonan.

The Panthers re-grouped and scored their first touchdown after Laird threw a jump ball to wide receiver Timothy Robinson. The offense continued to move better in the second half. Laird found wide receiver Keith Brown for the team’s second touchdown of the night.

City College outscored Sierra 16-14 in the second half, but the early deficit was too much to overcome. According to Walker, the Panthers brought more effort with them in the second half.

“The kids just started playing harder. [But if] you don’t play hard [all game], you don’t have a chance to win the game,” said Walker.

City College travels to College of Siskiyous next week before its next home game against Butte College Halloween night.
