City College men’s basketball team lost its Big 8 Conference opener, 61-60, to the American River College Jan. 6, despite holding a 12-point lead in the second half.

The Panthers had a chance to win the game with 4.4 seconds remaining when freshman guard Kellen Hill drove to the basket and put up a last-second floater, but the ball hit the rim as the buzzer went off.

The Beavers started the game firing up 3-pointers early and often, making five of them in the first half. ARC maintained a strong lead through most of the first half, but turnovers plagued them late, which allowed City College to mount a comeback.

With two minutes remaining in the first half, Panthers’ freshman guard Devin Joseph came up with a big steal in transition and scored a layup. The score was the start of a 10-2 run that put the Panthers ahead 34-31 at the half.

The run continued through the first couple minutes of the second half, and the Panthers took a commanding 12-point lead with 17 minutes remaining.

A surplus of fouls and missed shots by City College helped ARC mount its own comeback in the second half. ARC tied  the game with 14 minutes remaining.

The game stayed close the rest of the way. With the game tied at 60-60 with a little under 10 seconds remaining, Beavers forward Keishaun Sinclair was fouled and sent to the free throw line. Sinclair made the first of two shots, allowing the Panthers to grab the rebound and call a timeout with 4.4 seconds remaining.

Down 61-60 and needing to go the length of the floor for one last second shot, Hill took the inbound pass, went around a defender and, with a decent look at the basket, took the shot and missed.

Freshman forward Victor Rustin led the Panthers with 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Michael Wiggins, who fouled out in the last minute of the game, went 5-6 and scored 12 points.

The Panthers’ (6-8) next home game is Jan. 13 when they face cross-town rivals Cosumnes River College.
