Alex Montoya, a 15-year veteran of the Los Rios Police Department who was known for his caring attitude and enthusiastic service, died Oct. 23 of brain cancer, said LRPD Chief Cheryl Sears. He was 54.
“I constantly got positive feedback about Officer Montoya,” said City College Police Capt. Valerie Cox. “He really cared about people. He never thought of anybody as ‘calls.’”
Mr. Montoya began his career with LRPD as an officer for the Sacramento City College Police in 1999. Since that time he has worked at all locations throughout the district and was promoted to sergeant in 2012.
As sergeant, Mr. Montoya was on the interview panel for incoming staff and educated new police members as a field training officer.
“One of the things I learned from him was to engage the people that you serve,” said City College Police Sgt. Jinky-Jay Lampano. “He taught me to learn how to talk to people.”

“He was a cheerleader for us, even when he was sick,” said Cox. “In the 15 years I knew him, I can honestly say I have never seen him sad or depressed.”
Fluent in Spanish, Mr. Montoya was known for being community-oriented and for connecting with the large Hispanic population on campus, said Lampano. Prior to working for LRPD, Mr. Montoya served 20 years in the U.S. Army, and then worked as a reserve officer for the UC Davis police.
Mr. Montoya is survived by his wife, Amatya, and his son, Max.
Funeral services are set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at El Camino Baptist Church, 2805 El Camino Avenue, Sacramento.
