Obama’s race is run

Will students stay involved?

Yes we can believe that once again we have a voice in the political arena. Our 44th president is proof of that.

For so many years I’ve heard fellow students say things like, “It doesn’t matter who I vote for, the elections are rigged.” Or, “I feel like neither of the candidates represents me.”

After the hanging chads in Florida and the re-election of Bush in 2004, after he had already screwed things up so much, I felt the same way. It seemed like there was no point in getting involved in elections.

This election Barack Obama managed to get college students to not only care about the election, but to get involved. In September, one of my friends and I went with a group of people to Fernley, Nevada to canvass for Obama. The campaign director in Fernley was another college student who took time off from New York University to volunteer for nothing more than meager wages and long hours.

So the question is, will he be able to keep students involved, specifically City College students?

“He was all over Facebook, MTV, the Internet, etc. This showed that he knows how to relate to us because he knew how to reach us,” says political science major Xavier Broussard.

Hopefully he will still use these tools during the presidency to keep us involved.

I feel like his proposed policies are things that are of interest to a lot of college students, like making college affordable for middle class families, green initiatives, civil liberties, and the poor.

“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America,” Obama said in his inaugural address, calling all of us to take ownership in the rebuilding of our country.

So are politics and Obama just a media-fueled fad for the college -age group? Or is this the start of a new era of youth involvement in government?

“I certainly hope so. This election was all about change. There’s now one less reason to not be involved.” says Frank.
