City College formally celebrated the completion of the refurbished North Gym Feb. 6 with a dedication ceremony.

The event was marked by many administrative speakers, most notably Kathryn E. Jeffery, City College president. A commemorative plaque was also unveiled to pay homage to the taxpayers who helped fund the renovation and to serve as a token of remembrance for the dedication day.

Although it was a cloudy and wet morning, the poor weather did little to dampen the spirit of the ceremony.

“I am told that when it rains at an event, that it is a blessing,” Jeffery said.

Jeffery also addressed the various improvements that the newly remodeled North Gym now boasts.

Astrid Lord, City College basketball player and business major, expressed gratitude for the improved North Gym.

“This new gym really makes our team feel like part of the Sacramento City College family,” Lord said. “It’s different in almost every aspect. The floors are better, the seating is better and the extra facilities really make good add-ons.”

Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brice Harris also addressed the audience at the ceremony, speaking about the various future projects that are still in store for City College, projects like the modernization of Hughes Stadium and the Art Department Building.

“When we’re finished with this, four, five, six years from now, I think it’s going to be hard in the West Coast to find a college as beautiful as Sacramento City College,” Harris said. “We have done wonderful things, but you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

According to Robert Martinelli, vice president of City College Administrative Services, much of the $7.3 million cost of improving the North Gym was paid by taxpayer funding from Bond A. Martinelli said Bond A will also fund renovations in the Technology, Cosmetology and Fine Arts buildings, as well as the Auditorium and Mohr Hall.

“The taxpayers have done a lot for City College and that is important,” Martinelli said.

This sentiment is echoed in the engraving on the commemorative plaque, which reads: We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the California taxpayers who funded the modernization of this building.
