Three head coaches have led the City College women’s golf team since its inception in 1995. Now, for the first time in 15 years, the program will be led by someone new.

Michael Thomas was announced as the newest City College women’s golf coach this past spring, and, according to Athletic Director Mitch Campbell, he’s got big shoes to fill.

“For the most part, Sac City has been one of the dominant women’s golf programs in the Big 8, and so I look forward to keeping that going,” said Thomas.

Former head coach–turned–assistant Tim Kiernan took over the team in 2000 and led it to multiple winning seasons, including a California State Championship in 2009. However, because Kiernan is also the current softball coach and didn’t have much help coaching golf, he said he decided it was best to focus on one sport.

“I went in [to speak to Campbell], and I said, ‘Hey, the travel is getting to be too much for two sports.’ They agreed to get somebody, but I told them that I’d help [Thomas] as much as I can.”

Thomas, a Redwood City native, attended City College as a student from 1998 to 1999 before transferring to Sacramento State University.

He later graduated in 2002 with a Master’s Degree in Recreational Park Management. Before obtaining his degrees, Thomas began his career as a golf instructor in 1996, right after the program was created at City College.

In 1997, Thomas took his Professional Golfers Association playing ability test, which is a golf accreditation for playing on the PGA tour. He played in local sectional tournaments but never in any events on the PGA tour.

While Thomas coached American River College men’s golf, individual players have consistently qualified for the regional and state playoffs. The team’s highest Big 8 tournament finish in 2014 was third, its highest placing in a difficult Big 8 Conference.

Thomas’ new staff position at City College will allow him to maintain his original job as ARC men’s golf coach. In fact, according to City College Athletic Director Mitch Campbell, Thomas’ position at ARC played a factor in his hiring.

“We looked for somebody who had experience coaching golf, and if they had experience coaching golf at a community college level, even better,” said Campbell. “He had all of those things, so that’s how we were able to find him and put the pieces together.”

Thomas said he has goals he would like the program accomplish during his tenure as head coach.

“I hope to win a division title, a conference title, then a Nor Cal title and eventually a state title,” said Thomas.
