With every new season comes new obstacles for City College sports teams to overcome, including a strong conference schedule, according to Head Coach Steve Hanson.
Hanson is the women’s water polo coach, and believes this season might bring a better opportunity for the team’s success. This is because they play some of the their top Big 8 conference rivals on home turf at Hoos Pool.
“DVC (Diablo Valley) and American River College are always, always top of our conference,” Hanson said. “It’s nice to have them in our pool. We’ll be playing in a smaller (pool). That might benefit us and might mitigate some of their speed, With the (San Joaquin) Delta match-up, I like to circle that game every year because it’s one of those teams we should be beating, that’s our next level up.”
Women’s Soccer
Home field advantage is something that the women’s soccer Head Coach Jang-Ha Oh, says that the new and improved Hughes Stadium has given his players a true home-field advantage coming into this season. The new artificial turf has given the soccer team an opportunity to practice and play as much as possible.
“All of the Big 8 Conference coaches hate (playing) us because of too many holes (on the field),” Oh said. “Now we have a brand new turf field and we can play every single minute, every single time, all year round.”
Playing more often, and on a better playing surface, has given the team more opportunities to grow the right type of synergy, according to the coach. It is this new chemistry between the players that has them feeling like a much stronger squad.

“We’re a well-balanced team,” Oh said. “They are so excited to play against good teams that are strong like us. CRC, Sierra and ARC this season.”
WRESTLING
The City College wrestling team took second in the state tournament last season, Fresno City College took first. Head Coach Dave Pacheco discussed his returning talent to this year’s team and the accolades that they are bringing back with them to the mat.
“We have three medalists returning,” Pacheco said. “Shawn Porter was fourth in state last year. Paul Buchanan took seventh in state last year. Kale Degrandmont, he took fourth in state two years ago.”
The first competition of the season will be the Sac City tournament held on campus in the North Gym, Sept. 22. Fresno City College will be there as well, and Pacheco is excited to see how his wrestlers’ off-season conditioning compares to that of the only team better than City College in the state tournament last year.
“The majority of the guys have been working since spring,” Pacheco said. “As far as what we’ll do at the tournament, our goal is always to win. We took first and second in state (City College and Fresno City College), we’re both reloading and we’re just going to see who loaded the best.”
