As his players practice on the bright, grassy field of Hughes Stadium City College women’s soccer coach Jang-Ha Oh belts out the drills that he has set for his players to run through. The determination and reinforcement of his voice circle the stands of the stadium getting his team ready for the season.

Looking out on the field, one can notice something missing: There is a lack of returning sophomores. This year’s team was supposed to have eight returning players, but instead, only two are back with the team. With five of the players from last year being ineligible to play this season, Oh starts the season with more new talent than expected.

“The girls are just out of high school, from all different schools, different coaches and different styles and abilities,” said Oh. “I’m trying to put them together to get to a college level of soccer.”

Last season, the team had some trouble finding its footing after a good start to the season. The Panthers started out 3-0-1, before losing 16 straight games to finish out the season.

“Injuries were the cause of last year’s performance. Two concussions, one broken ankle and one knee problem,” said Oh. “Ten players couldn’t play. We were shorted on numbers with no subs.”

According to Oh, one key to this season is conditioning, and how hard players work during practice.

With six games already on the books, Oh is staying optimistic. The team is sitting at 1-5 on the season, having only scored two goals in those six games. A lack of scoring was a problem for the Panthers last season, as they averaged .8 goals per game and were shut out 12 times in the season.

“The first two games we lost were close games, it wasn’t a disappointing performance but we just need to work on getting the ball in the net more,” said Oh.

One of the players who Oh is looking forward to seeing play out the season is Brandy Sanchez, a freshman forward from El Dorado High School.

“She’s the main backbone of our defense,” said Oh.

Two of the players who are new to the team, twins Brianna and Brittany Thompson, recognize what they need to get on the winning side of things. They both agree that they hope to bring “a lot more intensity” to the team this season. Their biggest challenge, they said, is adapting to the collegiate upper level of playing.

“The speed of the game, it’s faster than what we used to play,” said Brittany.

Although the familiarity of the pace is not there, the twins do know the importance of a team dynamic and what they want to achieve. Their expectations for this year are all good things for a coach to hear.

Brianna said she’s looking forward to the team working closely enough that they become like family. And one other thing.

“Hopefully, we win,” she said.
