More machines in parking structure give students payment options
Three new paid parking kiosks were added in January to the second, third and fourth floors of the parking structure at City College with a payment option for credit cards.
The machines are an upgraded version of the older parking machines still located in the south lot, west lot and north lot. Nine daily parking machines are now available for students, according to Jinky Lampano, a City College police sergeant for the Los Rios Community College District.
“The old machines were very finicky when it rained,” said Lampano.
The machines were exposed to the elements and didn’t print out the permits properly in wet weather, he said.
“Also the bill acceptors were compromised during the rainy season because [the machines don’t] like wet dollar bills,” said Lampano. In addition, the coin slots were easily jammed when he said students used sticky coins.
Lampano said that having a credit card option in the new kiosk machines is beneficial for students because there are now three options for students to pay for parking passes.
The new parking machines are located on the southwest corner of the parking structure near the elevators and stairwell. Students and visitors may purchase tickets for $2, which are good from the time of purchase until 11:45 p.m. on that same date, according to Lampano.
Errun Li, a 21-year-old City College student, said he used a new paid parking machine on the fourth fl oor of the parking structure for the first time this semester. Though he thought it was convenient, Li said he did not have a good experience the first time he tried the machine.

Li, an undecided major, placed a $5 bill into the machine, hoping that it would accept it or return the bill, but it was never returned. Li said he was disappointed that the machine was not able to break his bill.
“I spent $7 to get my ticket,” said Li. “I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t take bigger bills, but at least it was able to take my credit card.”
Dinesh Barpaga, a biology major, said that he had heard of the new machines but had not yet used one.
Barpaga said that the old machines were inconvenient because of their locations, and the new machines are an improvement because they make it more convenient for students when they use the parking structure, even if the price of daily parking permits have increased.
“I’m not sure why the cost went from a dollar to $2,” says Barpaga. “It makes more sense to buy a semester parking
ticket.”
Regardless of the convenience of the new parking permit machines, Barpaga is not alone in noticing the parking pass fee increase. Other students have realized that the semester pass is more economical as well.
“The new machines in the parking structure are more convenient because students don’t have to walk all the way to the parking lot in order to get a parking ticket,” said Lisa Tan, a neurobiology physiology and behavior major.
“I don’t buy the tickets too often, [though] because of the sudden price hike, and I’d rather park somewhere residential or at the park,” Tan said. “If you don’t invest in the parking pass, then the [daily] cost will accumulate.
