Bob DeNigris is surrounded by postal boxes and unsorted mail. Listening to a copy machine rapidly make thousands of copies throughout most of the day might be displeasing to some people.

Not for DeNigris. He’s in the middle of it all. He’s dependable and dedicated throughout the dying age of hand-delivered mail.
Every morning around 8 DeNigris can be found in the Business building with his cart filled with envelopes and packages. City College students don’t even flinch as his pushcart makes unbearable commotion against the rough, rocky campus sidewalks, paths and hallways. He’s invisible.

Sorting through numerous pieces of daily mail at City College is only a portion of DeNigiris’ job. He travels throughout campus, bouncing from building to building, delivering mail. He’s not just a mail courier, but the middleman connecting two people through a dwindling form of communication.

“He knows his job,” says Restituto “Rusty” Maghanoy, DeNigris’ coworker and friend. “He is easygoing, friendly and personable to everyone.”

DeNigris says he has watched paper mail morph into snail mail in the advent of email, Twitter and texting. Nonetheless, DeNigris is keeping mail alive at City College. That’s his motive and passion as a mail courier.

DeNigris is comparable to the U.S. Postal Service motto: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

DeNigris has also transformed the title of being a mail courier into an enjoyable environment. He’s not an irritating Cliff Clavin type, like the postal worker in TV’s “Cheers.” DeNigris enjoys being a part of this community.

“I can communicate with everyone and anybody,” says DeNigris, as he pushes his mail cart aside the Business building halls and lets out a chuckle or two.

In his mailroom office, he laughs out loud as he speaks of his childhood memories arguing with his younger sister. However, the tone of his voice abruptly changes when he begins to dish out his unconditional love for his family as a whole. He’s a gentle man at heart and a caring courier.

City College students would be lucky to know an open-minded, personable man like DeNigris. If only he’d take off the invisible coat as he travels throughout the college campus.
