Thanks to the wonders of technology, fans of NCAA basketball no longer have to ditch work or school to keep track of all the action.

Students and professors have a wide array of options to use to keep up with the games while they’re supposed to be paying attention to class. Everything from text message updates to real-time tracking of tournament brackets, and you can even watch the full games online from a laptop or certain cell phones.

Zach Maslin, mechanical engineering major at Santa Clara University, said he’s been keeping up with the games on his cell phone,“whenever I was doing something else besides watching the game,” including during class.

“I definitely wasn’t paying attention,” Maslin said. “I was pretty good about hiding it.”

The games are only half the fun, with even President Obama filling out a tournament bracket with his predictions for the winner.

“It’s the competition aspect, that’s the main thing,” said Maslin. “Whenever March madness comes up, I know I have to start thinking about my bracket. It starts in late February when I really start following teams.”

“I ended up with only one out of four in the final four,” he said. Anderson hasn’t kept track of the games during class, but has used his laptop to keep up with his bracket in between scoring debates. He was quick to point out, “It does not interfere with my work.”

For some fans, stealing glances at the games between taking notes or working just won’t do — the tournament is the priority.

“I told my boss the day before I wouldn’t be there because I wasn’t feeling well, and got my shifts covered Thursday and Friday to watch all the games,” said City College student Toni Jackson.

“There are games on all day the first couple of days of the tourney. Who wouldn’t want to watch that?”

With all these high-tech ways to follow the tournament, some students no longer have a reason to skip class or work.

Anderson thinks students were absent during the tournament “just for the regular reasons.”

“I think because the weather is nice,” he said.
