The City College Foundation recently received an anonymous donation of $10,000 in the name of a former student, Lorrie Morris. The money will endow a new nursing scholarship to help students with the extra costs of the program.
The donation is especially mysterious because the donor’s name was withheld.The nursing program also has no record of Morris beyond her graduation from City College in 1945.
Mary Leland, executive director of the City College Foundation, said the donor is “a very private person.”
“I’m really wanting to build a relationship with this donor,” Leland said. “I believe that if we do a good job and honor the donor’s wishes that this donor will want to do more for the college in the future.”

Scholarships are important to nursing students, since they are asked to absorb a number of extra costs.
Nursing students have to pay for uniforms, equipment, background checks, drug screenings, required immunizations, CPR certification, and even professional liability insurance.
“This is one of the least expensive pathways for becoming a registered nurse,” said Dale Cohen, dean of City College’s nursing program. “This is really practically nothing compared to other colleges.”
According to Cohen, Nursing students pay about $1,000 a semester for the program. Cohen recommends that her students have at least $2,000 saved before starting.
“Work and put the money away before applying, or apply for scholarships, or take out a loan, but do this ahead of time,” says Cohen.
Marcia Jones, an administrative assistant for the Foundation, said The Lorrie Morris Scholarship will be available once the endowment earns enough interest to provide scholarships, but could not provide an exact date.
There are currently 22 scholarships for nursing students available through City College. Scholarship applications can be found online at https://scholarship.losrios.edu/SCCWelcome.aspx. The deadline to apply is Feb. 27.
