The Sacramento Mountain Lions, a professional football team that plays in the United Football League, are having practice and training camp at City College’s Hughes Stadium.

The league was founded in 2009, and in 2010 the California Redwoods, who originally played in the Bay Area, relocated to Sacramento and changed the team name to the Sacramento Mountain Lions. After the move the Mountain Lions searched for different places to practice in Sacramento. The choices eventually came down to City College and Sacramento State.

“Sacramento City was an undergoing renovations, so we decided to go with Sacramento State for games, but we liked the facilities here at Sacramento City so we decided to have most practices and training camp here,” said Sid Pillai, director of football operations for the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

For Brian Coulter, a defensive end for the Mountain Lions, practicing at City College brings back memories of his college days. “I actually went to a community college out in Mississippi, so I can relate to the college experience,” Coulter said. “So it brings you back to the days when you were going through your two-a-days.”

Many UFL players are athletes who were exceptional college players still trying to live out their NFL dreams. For someone like Daunte Culpepper, former NFL athlete and former Mountain Lions quarterback, it’s about getting back to the NFL. The UFL had a rough offseason in 2011 when it had to suspend operations for the Hartford Colonials due to financial reasons. The League can not afford to support five teams this season, only four.

The Mountain Lions open the season Sep. 17 with a game against the two-time UFL champion Las Vegas Locomotives at Hornet Stadium. Until then they’ll be practicing at City College preparing for their six-game season. “(The league is) positive for Sacramento, and Sacramento supported them last year. I hope the league makes it and they stick around,” City College Athletics Dean Mitch Campbell said.
