Student Services Vice President Michael Poindexter will serve as interim president beginning Feb. 3 for City College, according to an email from Los Rios Community College Chancellor Brian King.

Poindexter will replace current president Dr. Kathryn Jeffery, who is leaving for a position as president at Santa Monica College, until a permanent candidate is found.

“We’re looking to continue the legacy Kathryn Jeffery laid down,” said Poindexter Jan. 15 at the City College Spring Convocation.

Poindexter has over 25 years of experience working with colleges, according to the City College website. His previous experience includes service as a board member of the Community College Survey for Student Engagement and Achieving the Dream, where he contributed to some PBS video conferences.

Poindexter was present at the convocation in the Performing Arts Center Friday morning. This marked the final address Jeffery gave as president of City College. After providing a moment of silence for Roman Gonzalez, the student who died in the campus shooting last September, Jeffery commended the City College student leaders and showed some pictures of student and faculty activity on campus to express her appreciation.

Though Jeffery appeared emotional about leaving City College, she stated that City College’s staff should continue to work hard in her absence.

“We are making progress, but there is still more we will continue to strive to do,” Jeffery said.

A full-time replacement for Jeffery is being sought. A town hall meeting will be held Friday, Feb. 5. from 11 a.m. to noon at the Student Center for students and faculty to discuss what they are looking for in a new president, according to King.
