The City College softball team lost a close game to Solano College March 6 when the Falcons took the Panthers with an added insurance run in the seventh inning for a final score of 5-2.

The game started as a pitcher’s duel between the Panthers’ Ashten Welch and the Falcons’ Shannon Mestas. The two would match each other pitch for pitch until the third inning.

The game marked Welch’s seventh start of the season, coming into the game with a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.62.

Momentum swung away from the Panthers in the third inning when Welch took a line-drive hit off her leg. This allowed the Falcons to score the first run of the game. Welch would stay the inning without allowing another run by Solano.

An outfield assist by center fielder Nicole Miller would serve to get Welch out of trouble in the fourth inning. Miller threw out Falcons’ runner Britney Taglieri to end the inning after Taglieri attempted to score from second base with two outs.

Game action picked up in the sixth inning. After Welch allowed two more runs to score and loaded the bases with two outs, Panthers’ Head Coach Tim Kiernan made a move to the bullpen. Panthers’ Megan Wantz came in relief and took the Panthers out of a bases-loaded jam with a pop out hit to left field from Taglieri.

With little offensive play thus far against the Falcons, the Panthers headed into the bottom of the sixth down 4-0.

With two runners on and two outs, next-to-bat Panthers’ catcher Allie Cheetham would swing to shake things up. Cheetham singled to center field to score two runs and cut the Falcons lead to 4-2.

Unfortunately, City College would not score beyond those two runs off Cheetham. Rather, after an added insurance run from Solano in the seventh inning, the Panthers would fall to the Falcons for a final score of 5-2.
