City College students have fun on a budget

Between going to school, trying to work and living in constant limbo with financial aid, college students could always use a little relaxation. But economic problems have made it harder than ever to stretch those few dollars to cover the essentials, let alone a good time.

So what can a student on a budget do to have some fun without breaking the bank? Surprisingly there are plenty of things to do around town that are fun and inexpensive.

For art lovers, the Second Saturday Art Walk is the place to be. On the second Saturday of every month Sacramento galleries stay open late so people can walk from gallery to gallery to view paintings, listen to local bands, and grab a bite. Some local restaurants even extend their hours for the walk.

Movie buffs will also love the Tower Theater which offers a film lover’s discount book. Get five general
admission tickets for $27.50. The tickets are valid anytime between Sunday and Thursday, and before 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The book is 40 percent cheaper than buying five regular tickets.

Mondays are known as Student Monday at the Tower. With any valid student ID, the ticket will cost $6.50, as opposed to $9.50. The students also receive a free popcorn coupon with free refills.

For students that would rather skip the movie-going experience, there’s not shame in staying home.

At Luna’s Café & Juice bar downtown you can have a night out for under $10.

“Door cover usually ranges from $4-$8 depending on the event – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the cheaper nights,” says owner Art Luna. “We’re known for food and bad jokes.”

The menu varies from sandwiches, and Mexican food to espresso beverages and juices. Luna’s Café has been open for 25 years and has the longest running open mic poetry series in Sacramento. Poetry nights are Thursdays with a one-drink minimum. Live bands play Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Many of the clubs and cafes in Sacramento have no cover weekday events, and the crowds are smaller and quieter. So try making Thursday your night out for the week, and stay home to study on Friday and Saturday nights.

Students on a budget may have fewer pennies to pinch right now, but fun can still be an option without going broke.
