Kendrick Lamar surprise releases new album

Kendrick Lamar surprise releases new album

It has been a little over a year since Kendrick Lamar dropped To Pimp a Butterfly on the world. With all the energy poured into last year’s album, and the critical acclaim that came with the release, you’d think Lamar would have taken a break.

Yet, barely a year later—while the TPAB smoke is still clearing—along with exhilarating televised performances of album cuts and unheard gems, K-Dot surprise drops an eight-track opus of demo cuts from the TPAB sessions named untitled unmastered. According to Lamar’s manager’s Twitter account, basketball superstar LeBron James pushed for the album’s release.

I’m not sure if James is the main person to thank, especially with the “untitled” tracks Lamar has been performing on television over the past year, but I’m sure it helped speed up the process. Songs that were considered myths and improvisations, turn up in album-quality form on untitled unmastered.

The tracks for the album are untitled, along with dates when they were created. Kendrick Lamar continues to display why he is “King Kendrick,” as the songs on untitled unmastered. are so good and jam-packed with expert lyricism, catchy new (or old) hooks and catchphrases, it’s hard to believe these are only demo cuts and songs that didn’t fit the TPAB concept.

Some might argue that some of Lamar’s best work is within these untitled tracks. After each listen, I agree. Highlights include surrounding tracks with chants of “Pimp, pimp, hooray!” to uplifting listeners who want to get as “high” as himself with “levitate, levitate, levitate.” Lamar also quite possibly and subtly ends rapper Jay Electronica’s stagnant career, with the line: “Before you poke out your chest, loosen your bra/ Before you step out of line and dance with the star/ I could never end a career if it never start.” And let’s not forget the most quotable line of the album, “Get Top on the phone!”.

untitled unmastered. is highlighted by untitled 05 | 09.21.2014, featuring label mates Punch and Jay Rock as they each trade bars over a jazzy beat. Cee Lo Green makes a guest appearance on untitled 06 | 06.30.2014, which leads into the sprawling untitled 07 | 2014 – 2016, an epic and all-time great Lamar song that has three parts, featuring Swizz Beatz’s and Alicia Keys’ son, with a production credit on part two of the track.

Lamar has never disappointed, and untitled unmastered. follows the trend. The album has everything: strong production, unforgettable lyrics, catchy hooks, songs with “messages”. And with only eight tracks, it makes for an easy and fun listen — and repeat listens. Fans dream of their rappers surprise dropping unreleased material like this. Hip-hop is not dead if Kendrick Lamar is reigning supreme. We are lucky to be witnessing a legend’s story unfold before our very own eyes. Let’s sit back and appreciate Kendrick Lamar in his prime, only getting better with each passing day. Pimp, pimp, hooray!
